The Big Fat Vedic Hindu Wedding

Everyone knows there is nothing simple about Indian weddings, but a Hindu marriage gets even more complicated...there are many rituals associated with a Hindu wedding, with Arya Samaj Vedic Pandit Ji sacraments playing a big role in the ceremonies, which lend weight to the new chapter beginning in the wedding couple's lives...
According to arya samaj vedic pandit ji ,Not One But Eight Types Of Marriages are mentioned in the scriptures If you thought "one big wedding" described a Hindu marriage, think again! It gets bigger, with not one but eight types of marriages or "Vivah" mentioned in our shashtras: Brahma Vivah, Daiva Vivah, Aarsh Vivah, Prajaapatya Vivah, Asur Vivah, Gandharv Vivah, Raakshas Vivah and Pishaach Vivah...the first four are considered auspicious, with the father of the bride having a role to play by giving away his daughter; but the last four have an element of bypassing the role of elders, or have a forced quality about them...

1. Brahma Vivah

This is the ideal form of marriage, recognised by three main characteristics: acceptance of marriage by both sets of parents; marriage conducted as per Vedic rituals; and no dowry being exchanged.

2. Dev Vivah

This is a marriage between a purohit who performed a yajna and thus won the hand of the daughter of the yajmaan, or the one who arranged the yajna to be performed. This is rare in today's world but was quite common when yajnas were frequently organised by people.

3. Arsh Vivah

Aarsh Vivah is a marriage with all the elements mentioned before: parents' consent and Vedic rituals, but the new aspect is exchange of dowry.

4. Prajaapatya Vivah

Prajaapatya Vivah is similar to Brahma Vivah, the difference being, no guests are invited. In modern day parlance, it is the "private ceremony for family only"!

5. Asur Vivah

The next four are considered inferior marriages: Asur Vivah even sounds bad! This term refers to a marriage when the parents sell their daughter to the bridegroom, under pressure or for financial gain.

6. Gandharv Vivah

Gandharv Vivah is, as the name suggests, a "heavenly" or "out-of-this-world" marriage, where a man and woman have marital status minus any marriage rituals. Yeah, this is your modern day live-in marriage! Bet Kareena and Saif didn't know they had a Gandharva Vivah...they have Shakuntala and Dushyant (left photo) to thank for their inspiration!

7. Rakshas Vivah

Rakshas Vivah is one where the woman is abducted by force.

8. Pishaach Vivah

Sadly, though being classified as a marriage, this is not marriage at all. Pishaach Vivah is the worst form of relationship between a man and a woman. This refers to marriage based on rape, where a man overcomes a woman against her will and keeps her as his sexual slave.
